Today we're excited to share that Turso, pioneers of the many database architecture, is being acquired by Supabase. Together, we're building the database platform for the agentic era. Instant, lightweight databases for every agent, and a seamless path to Postgres when an application outgrows them.

#Agents changed how databases are used and how many are needed

The rise of agents has changed the shape of how people use databases. Alongside the one big central database, agents need lightweight databases that come online instantly, stay always available, and get created at a rate our industry has never seen before. One agent, one task, one user. Each agent deserves its own isolated database and the economics have to work at millions of databases.

SQLite has long been the natural fit for workloads like this. It's small, fast, and runs anywhere. But it was never designed for the demands of modern server workloads and its single-writer limitation has held it back.

#Why we built Turso

We started Turso to build the next evolution of SQLite. We rewrote it from the ground up as open source, lifted its core limitations for server workloads like concurrent writes, and delivered it through a cloud service built on a diskless, WAL-on-S3 architecture. The result is databases that can be provisioned on demand, per agent, at a fraction of the traditional cost, both in our cloud and on your own through BYOC.

That shift in unit economics has made Turso the choice for teams building agents at scale, including Superhuman, Sauna.ai, and Mastra.

#Why Supabase

At the same time, Postgres keeps gaining momentum with developers, and Supabase has emerged as the clear leader in the category. With auth, storage, and a broad integration ecosystem built around the database, Supabase's developer and agent experience has earned it the top spot among AI builders.

We share a deep commitment to open source, an obsession with developer experience, and a willingness to take on hard problems. Joining Supabase brings us much closer to a goal we've had since day one, serving a billion databases.

Agents have become the primary users of technology, and Supabase is the leading database for the agentic era. I've admired the architecture the Turso team built from day one. Bringing them on board expands what we can offer agents to serve them even better.

#What this means for Turso users

The Turso platform continues, and now being a part of Supabase, it gets stronger. Here's what you can expect:

  • Turso keeps running. Your databases, APIs, and workflows continue as they do today.
  • Open source stays open. Turso Database remains open source and actively developed.
  • A clear graduation path. When SQLite isn't enough, you can move into standard Postgres through the Supabase ecosystem, and all the way to petabyte scale with Multigres.
  • More to come. Expect deeper integration between Turso and Supabase in the coming months.

#The team

Glauber Costa joins Supabase as Head of Agentic Services, alongside cofounder Pekka Enberg and the rest of the Turso team.

From the start of our journey, I've had a goal to serve upwards of a billion databases to our customers. Being a part of Supabase, with its gargantuan developer success and ever-growing partner ecosystem, brings this goal a lot closer.

#Thank you

To our customers, contributors, and community. None of this happens without you. You pushed SQLite further than anyone thought possible, and we can't wait to show you what we build in the next phase of our journey with Supabase.
